I’m gonna do us both a favor with this handy link, saving us both from the inevitable TL;DR that would be here.
[ Personality ] :
James in a nutshell...
Though, for those unfamiliar with James, I suppose I should go a bit deeper. At first glance, this tall lumbering man could come across as almost intimidating or even downright surly, and while he shouldn’t exactly be intimidating, huge doormat that he is, he actually IS somewhat the ladder. Though, it’s not because James has always been a rude sort of guy, even if he’s never been one that’s exactly socially graceful, but rather because he’s been through quite a lot of emotional trauma in the form of his wife dying. Now this is a tragedy for anyone, certainly, James being no exception, but the kind of guy James is really hinges on how much this has affected him emotionally and mentally.
It’s pretty easy to guess that James is not the kind of guy to have a lot of buddies, that is to say, any at all. He appears to be a rather lonely kind of guy, and he really is, so when he’s introduced to a lovely woman like Mary Shephard, it’s no surprise that she quickly became the love and light of his life. That being said, it should piece together pretty nicely how much losing her would have a negative affect on a loner like James. While he’s a relatively good natured man, friendly in his awkwardness and well meaning to boot, he doesn’t cope well when it comes to extreme emotional strain, nor does he carry himself in a very welcoming way to invite people to comfort him. James is definitely the kind of guy someone would sooner shrug off as being needlessly rude, when he’s actually suffering a great loss and just doesn’t know how to deal with it properly, or even know how to ask for help.
These facts are what lead James down a twisted path of suffering in silence for three years and growing bitter of near everything. While he didn’t exactly lose her at the beginning of those three years(Which in the beginning of the game he tries to believe that’s the case. It isn’t, GG James, GG), he still went through a lot watching her slowly rot away in a hospital bed, unable to help her at all. That really does a number on one’s sense of self, here you are, supposed to be this woman’s husband, supposed to be there for her, supposed to be her rock, and there isn’t a damn thing you can do. You’re completely and utterly helpless and all you can do is watch her wither away as doctors seem to not even care about the pain both of you are going through. No matter how many text books you look through, hardly understanding a word of it, not because you are stupid, but because you just aren’t schooled in the way of doctors, but in that helplessness, you gotta do something, and even THAT isn’t enough. Three years of hurt and helplessness, three years he suffered as his wife suffered and he did it alone.
Well, maybe not completely alone, because James did, for a time, turn to alcohol because of how shitty he is at coping. James is definitely a person who, when left alone, will unwittingly follow a very self destructive path instead of actually seeking help at all. It’s because of this that things went as poorly as they did, in other words, Mary’s life wasn’t claimed by her illness, but rather the very husband that had been suffering with her for three long years. Murder is bad, no matter what, I’m sure everyone can agree on this, but the course of events that are taken tend to make the act either justified, or at the very least, understandable. In this case, it wasn’t justified, it wasn’t an act of self defense or killing one to save a million, or anything like that, however, it’s understandable why James came to such a conclusion, not to mention it separates him from your typical murderer.
What James did was an act of mercy and selflessness as much as it was an act of selfishness. James loved Mary, loved her like you wouldn’t believe, like mentioned previously, she was the light of his life. But a person can only take so much abuse, and while it’s understandable on Mary’s side why she lashed out at him and treated him poorly in her illness, it’s also understandable why James grew bitter and jaded because of it. That mixed with his loneliness and the stress and with his emotional brittleness lead to him eventually snapping and smothering her with a pillow. This, ladies and gentlemen, is how James winds up in Silent Hill.
Since James couldn’t handle the fact he killed his own wife, his mind distorts this information, he deludes himself into thinking she died three years ago, and that her illness took her, when in reality it has hardly even been that long since he did the deed. He then goes to Silent Hill(Which is their special place.) because of a letter calling him there, a letter from his deceased wife. He shows his doubts about this, but goes anyways. With these delusions of thinking she might be alive and waiting for him, we get to see the old James, the James that was happy and somewhat derpy. Much like an excited golden lab who’s dancing at the door waiting for their owner to come in. His friendliness shows through when he runs into Angela and has a small conversation with her and tells her he hopes she finds who she’s looking for.
James further proves how much he just wants to help people later when he finds Angela again and she’s very much giving the impression that she’s contemplating suicide, and despite hardly knowing this girl, he tries to talk her down from it. She’s also carrying a large knife, which kind of shows James’ bravery(or lack of self preservation), where as anyone else would have probably GTFO’d at the sight of this not-all-the-way-mentally-there girl chilling in a room, staring into a mirror with a knife, especially after dealing with some of the monsters in the town. Instead, James is calm and reassuring, when he could have just left her on her own. He even offers for her to come with him, which she rejects.
He continues this friendscapade when later he runs into Eddie. Though, he does leave him alone to hurl into a toilet(The room having a dead body in the refrigerator, which is the probably cause of his throwing up) on their first meeting, and who can honestly blame him? Later on though, when Laura(A girl he meets around the time he met Eddie) runs outside where there are monsters, James tries to include Eddie in his pursuit of her. Eddie declines, much to James’ disapproval. This also shows that James is a pretty protective guy, what with how he worries about an eight year old girl being out there with monsters despite not even knowing her name(at the time) and their only interactions were of her stepping on his hand, laughing at him, and then later saying he didn’t even love his wife. Remember when I said he was a doormat? Yeah this continues to be a thing. Especially with Maria, who is like basically a Silent Hill sexy version of his wife with a bitchy attitude, who pulls on James’ guilt strings like no other.
See, during those three years of Mary’s illness, James grew to be sexually frustrated. This isn’t to be confused with him being a pervert, but more so of the fact that James is a human being and he was faithful to his dying wife, just he’s STILL a person does has physical needs. Through the symbolism in the game, it’s pretty apparent that James feels guilty about these feelings of sexual frustration. His monsters are a large part of this, most of them looking very feminine, one being literally two abdomens connected at the waist, so it’s legs and butts, basically. Maria is a figment from this frustration(Along with his longing for Mary), a sexed up incarnation of Mary’s memory, with a lot more sass than what dear sweet, conservative Mary had. The only monster of James’ that isn’t feminine is Pyramid Head, which is basically James’ personal executioner. See, how Silent Hill works, is it crafts its monsters around the psyche of the person within the town. Dark secrets, regrets, so on, all of it shapes these monsters, which are all pieces of a puzzle to the person’s mind.
The best example of this in James’ case is Pyramid Head. Which represents James in a way, the same way that Maria represents Mary. It’s a twisted view of James, made out to be a vicious monster that kills without hesitation and and rapes(Because of James’ sexual frustration) the other monsters--yes, rapes. That internet meme didn’t come from no where. But the monsters it aims this at in particular are ones that represent James’ sexual inclinations(The mannequins) and the one that represents James’ helplessness and suffering(The lying figure). This is a metaphor towards James’ own self and his desires and the punishment he feels he should have. After all, it was his own mind that whipped up this terror to punish him in the first place. Which says something about James and his guilt. He thinks himself so awful, that he comes up with a thing like Pyramid Head to come after him. Like I said before, this guy has a guilt complex that’s out of this world.
Now, it seems like I’m explaining a lot about Silent Hill and just linking stuff to James from it, which is accurate, but the truth is, the way Silent Hill 2 is, everything in the game is a reflection of James’ own personal thoughts; symbolism of his inner most feelings and the core of him psyche. It really just reflects who he is as a person and how he feels. It even reflects in the environment when his hope starts to slip. See, while he’s in Silent Hill, facing all this danger and adversity, he remains hopeful that once he’s done with all of this, once he’s gone through all this danger, his wife will be there and that’s all that matters. Who cares if monsters are spewing acid on him, or that there’s a pyramid headed thing with a giant butcher’s knife trying to kill him, if he can get to Mary, all will be well. Though, as he starts to realize the truth, that Mary IS dead, and that his story about her dying three years ago starts to show how bogus it really is, that hopeful, dorky demeanor starts to fade, and the depressed, surly, and serious James starts to resurface.
By the time he’s realized the truth, there’s a new side of James introduced, one more befitting those three years of emotional torture. He’s more stern, more blunt, and determined to end this all. Though, with how James is as a character, this means there’s four possible endings to this nightmare of his, one he kills himself soon after defeating Maria(Aka his delusions), two he defeats MARY(and accepts his delusions and continues to follow the same destructive cycle again and again), three he defeats his delusions again, but this time he leaves Silent Hill and learns to move past this all, or four, he gives into his obsession of wanting Mary back so much that he takes her body to the center of the lake and tries to revive her. No one knows if this works. For this app though, I’m taking him from the in water ending, which means, the ending he gives up on all hope, on life, and decides that he wants to be with Mary so much, living isn’t worth it anymore.
To sum this all up, James is a very troubled man, with deep seeded issues. He’s kind hearted by default, but from the pain in his life he’s grown a bit bitter, despite still being a bit of a doormat. And even if he did kill his wife, he feels guilty about it obviously. He’s an otherwise good person who was made into a metaphorical monster by pain and negligence, and it’s hard and nobody understands.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths
+Desensitized: There isn't much that really affects James on the gross factor, he's stuck his hand into toilets filled with questionable substances and the like without a moment's thought. He can stomach quite a lot.
+Puzzlemaster/Handyman: James is actually pretty talented with coming up with unorthodox solutions for problems with items that one wouldn't normally think to use. He did make a handle for a trapped door using a wax doll, a horse shoe, and a lighter.
+Physically strong: James is no superman, but he's a pretty big guy with a good deal of strength. He's able to use a giant sword that's about his height in length. While him using it isn't with any relative ease, he can use it rather affectively as a weapon still.
+Kind hearted: Even if James may come off as stand offish and distant, underneath it all he’s actually a very kind and giving person.
Weaknesses
-Doormat: James isn't good at speaking up for himself, like at all. He honestly gets walked all over by an 8 year old girl.
-Guilt complex: James has a guilt complex that's more crushing than a 10 ton bolder on a person's spine. It doesn't take much for him to start beating himself up about shit that happens and it being his fault. In fact, if it wasn't for his guilt, Silent Hill 2 wouldn't have even happened.
-Emotionally unstable: James isn't exactly the best at controlling his emotions, or handling great amounts of stress. He's actually pretty fragile when it comes to emotional and mental stability.
-Basically no self preservation: James does a lot of things despite how dangerous it could be, he literally doesn’t care if he’s hurt, or if he dies. He’s somewhat suicidal after all.
-Socially awkward: James is hardly graceful at all, in fact, he looks uncomfortable and out of place the majority of time, and him talking doesn’t help anything either. Most people take what he says as being grumpy or surly, when really he just doesn’t know how to really interact with people.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
He’s sad. :(
But in all honesty, he'll probably have a few things with him out of the BOAT load of weapons he carries. He'll have his plank of wood(So fearsome James), his picture of his wife, and his radio.
[ Sample ] :
It was almost freeing in a way, how the water sounded as it erupted around his vehicle, how it washed over his windshield and surrounded his car, drawing him and it in deeper into its depths. He knew he’d be at peace, without this aching hole in his heart, he’d no longer be without Mary, no. He’d have her and she’d have him and everything would be right again, he just knew it. He still couldn’t help the pace of his heart as it increased the deeper he went, as the light started to fade with how deep his car was sinking. Water spilling in the cracks, slowly filling up the cab. His hands clutching the steering wheel, causing his knuckles to go white. As much as this was what he wanted, what he knew, what he felt to be right, there was still that instinctual feeling of I’m going to die, but he calmed himself, took in a steady breath of the remaining air he had before closing his eyes as he felt the water pool around his ankles. Soon, it was to his knees, waist... chest...
Suddenly the pressure was gone. The bone chilling water wasn’t surrounding him or his car and he no longer felt the burn in his lungs from the lack of air.. Here he was, splayed on the ground, soaked, confused, and very much alive. Who saved him?--No, more accurately, who denied him his chance to be with Mary once again? Who took that from him? He almost had the mind to be pissed about it, if he wasn’t so disappointed. He sits up, looking himself over. Soaked to the bone, clothes clinging to him uncomfortable, but not dead like he had been aiming for. He didn’t have a clue what was happening, but who could? Was this honestly at the bottom of the lake? Some city encased in a bubble? What the hell was with Silent Hill? First the monsters and the other strange happenings, like that labyrinth out of no where, and the hotel going from near perfect condition to a burned down wreck once he watched the video tape. Was this honestly far from the absurdities of that wretched town he and Mary once called their Special Place? He wasn’t sure, he wasn’t sure of anything anymore.
He figured it was quite possible the damn town wasn’t finished with him, as if what he went through wasn’t enough. It wanted to keep him alive, wanted him to suffer more or something. He wouldn’t be surprised what with how everything else was. Either way, sitting here like a confused drowned rat wasn’t going to solve anything, and so he rose to his feet, almost patting himself off before realizing how that’d be sort of silly with him being soaked like he is. So, instead he tried to ring out his shirt a bit, despite how obviously it’d do no real good. With a deepened frown, he turned to look around him, viewing the giant coral, and the generous amount of people. It was almost strange in a sense, seeing so many people after being in a virtual ghost town, the only life there being a few people who seemed to be as troubled as him, the rest were monsters that sometimes sought him out, but other times seemed just as disinterested in him as most normal people were. He wasn’t exactly sure why that train of thought caused his chest to tighten a bit, but he otherwise tried to to ignore it.
There were more important things to worry about than something that doesn’t even matter, he needed to figure out where he was, and if this really was a part of Silent Hill, and further more, if not the most important, who the hell denied him what he wanted.
